Investment and markets

Long-horizon capital, private markets and the market systems that price and transfer risk are where physical, operational and transition shocks are eventually valued. This group of The Global Risks Alliance (GRA) sector platforms brings together four established communities: Asset Management Nexus, Capital Markets Nexus, Private Equity Nexus and Institutional Funds Nexus. Each publishes evidence for every manager's or owner's own analysis, and none advises on, recommends or arranges any investment. This page is part of the specialist financial network.

01In brief

The short answer.

The investment and markets group of GRA sector platforms brings together four established communities, Asset Management Nexus, Capital Markets Nexus, Private Equity Nexus and Institutional Funds Nexus, where shocks are eventually valued across the investment chain. They publish evidence for each manager's own judgement and never coordinate collective action.

02Spatial finance

Assets on the grid, and the portfolio they make.

Where a portfolio's assets sit, and how much of its value is most exposed. Hypothetical assets, not an assessment.

Sixteen assets at real towns, and the share of portfolio value in the most exposed places.Hypothetical assets and design scores, not advice.

Managers

Asset Management Nexus

What physical, transition and nature-related risk means for portfolios, and how scenario evidence can inform each manager's own analysis without becoming advice or coordinated action. Visit Asset Management Nexus.

Markets

Capital Markets Nexus

How risk is priced, transferred and concentrated in markets, and how disruption propagates through market structure. Visit Capital Markets Nexus.

Private

Private Equity Nexus

Operational and supply-chain resilience in privately held companies, and the scenario questions owners can ask of a holding. Visit Private Equity Nexus.

Owners

Institutional Funds Nexus

Pensions and long-term funds whose liabilities outlast most risk models: longevity, health and long-horizon resilience evidence. Visit Institutional Funds Nexus.

05Spatial view

Portfolios as maps of assets.

An equity, bond or private-asset portfolio is ultimately a set of physical assets: plants, mines, buildings, fleets. Asset-level databases geolocate them and attribute them to issuers through ownership chains and legal entity identifiers. GRA uses that attribution to show which share of a portfolio's value sits in which hazard, with hypothetical portfolios only. Work continues at Asset Management Nexus, Institutional Funds Nexus, Private Equity Nexus and Capital Markets Nexus.

06Methods

The science these platforms rely on.

  • Financial economics and econometrics, for how risks are priced and how prices respond
  • Scenario design, for comparing outcomes across plausible futures and stating what was not tested
  • Network contagion and market technology, for how disruption travels through market structure
  • Actuarial mathematics and decision analysis, for liabilities that run for decades

Each method has one canonical description in the STEM Commons stewarded by The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI); a platform shows how that method is used in its own sector.

07Boundaries

Evidence for independent decisions, never collective action.

  1. 01

    No advice

Nothing on these platforms recommends buying, selling or holding any security, fund or asset, or advises on the issue of a security.

  2. 02

    No coordination

Platform work never produces a collective commitment on which sectors, firms or projects to invest in or exclude. Each participant decides independently.

  3. 03

    No introductions

GRA does not introduce investors to issuers, funds or projects, and takes no pay tied to any transaction.

These safeguards are part of a written competition policy that counsel reviews before membership opens.

08Connections

Related communities and evidence.

A proposed Private Credit community is in development and not yet open. Related research: industry research and models and professional methods. The capital markets field of The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI) is described on its capital markets and investment page. Other groups: insurance and banking and technology and operational risk.

09Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

Fiduciary dutyThe legal duties of loyalty, prudence and care that trustees and managers owe to beneficiaries.
StewardshipInvestors' use of ownership rights and influence, through voting, engagement and escalation, to protect long-term value.
Universal ownerA large investor so widely diversified that it effectively owns a slice of the whole economy and its systemic risks.
Antitrust safeguardsThe written rules, agendas, minutes and counsel review that keep competitors in a trade association from exchanging competitively sensitive information or coordinating prices, output or customers.
11Questions

Questions and answers.

Can these platforms help me choose investments?
No. They publish evidence and methods for your own analysis. GRA is not an investment adviser and never recommends a security, fund or project.
Is scenario evidence a forecast of returns?
No. A scenario is a plausible future with stated assumptions, published with sensitivities and what was not tested. It is never a forecast of loss or return.
Can investors agree common positions through GRA?
No. GRA's design rules out collective commitments on what to finance, insure or invest in. Participants keep their independent commercial decisions.
How do I take part?
Register interest through membership and participation. Applications open once membership terms are adopted.
