01In brief

The short answer.

Learning in Insurance Nexus is the set of paths through which professionals build competence in the insurance and catastrophe field, starting from the methods it applies, such as actuarial mathematics as well as extreme value theory and tail risk. Courses are listed once approved, with provider, level and terms; completing one is a learning record, not a professional licence or certification.

From enquiry to contribution.

Professional learning: a working group from charter to sunsetA charter sets the question and the code of conduct; members join with declared interests; a workplan produces deliverables that are reviewed and credited; the group reports and sunsets or renews. Design of the process, not a record of a run.

03Geography

Hazards and exposure in the Gulf of Mexico coast.

For professional learning, in GRA's spatial-finance reading, the map opens on population density and night lights with built-up and settlement extent from NASA GIBS, framed on the Gulf of Mexico coast; every other NASA layer, live feed and forecast waits in the layer list.

The interactive map needs JavaScript; the layer list and sources are below.

05Professional learning

Qualifications and public courses the Insurance Nexus community relies on.

Insurance Nexus does not award qualifications; it points underwriters and portfolio managers and others to the bodies that do, and its method notes are written to sit beside them.

TermDefinition
Learning outcomeA statement of what a learner knows, understands and is able to do on completing a learning process, the unit the European Qualifications Framework uses to compare qualifications.
Micro-credentialA record of learning outcomes from a short, assessed course of study.
Continuing professional developmentThe planned maintenance and broadening of a professional's knowledge, skills and judgement throughout a working life, recorded under the rules of the relevant professional body.
Extreme value theory and tail riskExtreme value theory and tail risk study the behaviour of rare, high-impact events.
