01In brief

The short answer.

Reinsurance and Catastrophe is a specialist platform of The Global Risks Alliance for insurance and catastrophe, climate and hazards, and disaster and crisis. Its mandate covers reinsurance, catastrophe modelling, protection gaps and accumulated physical risk in the insurance system. GRA publishes it, answers for its content and takes no decision on anyone's behalf. It is in development at service level R0, and activities open as each is ready.

How Reinsurance and Catastrophe is governedA mandate sets the platform's scope; an editor and reviewers govern what it publishes; programmes and the community supply the work; the integrity route handles corrections; authority over decisions stays outside. Design of the governance, not a record.

03Geography

Hazards and exposure in the Gulf of Mexico coast.

For industry scope and publisher, in GRA's spatial-finance reading, the map opens on night lights, population density and flood water with built-up and settlement extent from NASA GIBS, framed on the Gulf of Mexico coast; every other NASA layer, live feed and forecast waits in the layer list.

The interactive map needs JavaScript; the layer list and sources are below.

04Industry scope

Reinsurance, catastrophe modelling and accumulated physical risk.

The platform covers reinsurance, catastrophe modelling, protection gaps and accumulated physical risk in the insurance system. Its methods are natural catastrophe modelling, exposure aggregation, and the study of recovery and uncertainty.

Its subject community is reinsurance analysts, catastrophe modellers, actuaries and insurance risk teams. Actuarial methods in general are the subject of GRA's Actuarial and Quantitative Risk platform; primary insurance is the subject of the Insurance Nexus.

05Field and frame

Reinsurance and Catastrophe: the field and the rules it is read against.

Reinsurance and Catastrophe is a GRA platform in development. Its thesis concerns reinsurance, catastrophe modelling, protection gaps and accumulated physical risk in the insurance system. It serves catastrophe modellers, reinsurance underwriters and brokers' analysts, ILS fund risk teams and hazard scientists working with insurers.

10Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
Service level R0The current service level of Nexus pages: information and enquiries only. An enquiry receives a reference and a named next step; it creates no membership, contract, assignment or commitment.
Conflict of interestA situation in which financial, professional or personal interests could compromise, or appear to compromise, judgement in research or review.
ReinsuranceInsurance bought by insurers to transfer part of their risk to another carrier, limiting the effect of large or accumulated losses on their capital.
Catastrophe modelSoftware that combines hazard, exposure and vulnerability modules to simulate many possible events and estimate the distribution of insured loss.
12Questions

Questions and answers.

Why is this a GRA platform?
Because it concerns how the financial services industry understands catastrophe risk. Hazard science itself is done by GCRI.
When will the platform open?
No date is set. It opens in stages as its charter, editor, safeguards and content are in place.
Can a catastrophe model vendor take part?
Vendors can take part in research under the same safeguards as other participants. Taking part implies no endorsement.
Does the platform use members' claims or exposure data?
Not without clear written terms. Exposure, pricing and claims data are competitively sensitive. Research relies on public data and on data shared under terms that protect policyholders and competition.
Can participation be cited as recognition of a model or firm?
No. Taking part confers no endorsement, approval, rating or regulatory standing.
