01In brief

The short answer.

The Reinsurance and Catastrophe community is the network of reinsurance analysts and catastrophe modellers who contribute expertise, review and data to its work on insurance and catastrophe, climate and hazards, and disaster and crisis. They take part through moderated subject groups and working groups. Rules apply equally to all, interests are declared, and taking part gives no authority over findings.

Professional community: a working group from charter to sunsetA charter sets the question and the code of conduct; members join with declared interests; a workplan produces deliverables that are reviewed and credited; the group reports and sunsets or renews. Design of the process, not a record of a run.

03Geography

People and exposure in the Gulf of Mexico coast.

For professional community, in GRA's spatial-finance reading, the map opens on population density and night lights with built-up and settlement extent from NASA GIBS, framed on the Gulf of Mexico coast; every other NASA layer, live feed and forecast waits in the layer list.

The interactive map needs JavaScript; the layer list and sources are below.

05Who it serves

The professions Reinsurance and Catastrophe is designed for.

ProfessionTypical question they bring to Reinsurance and Catastrophe
Catastrophe modellersHow should secondary uncertainty be shown?
Reinsurance underwriters and brokers' analystsHow do climate-conditioned event sets differ?
ILS fund risk teamsWhere is basis risk largest?
Hazard scientists working with insurersHow should secondary uncertainty be shown?
06Proposed themes

Subject themes proposed for Reinsurance and Catastrophe groups.

The themes proposed for Reinsurance and Catastrophe are model validation, secondary perils and basis risk in index triggers. Each would run only once moderation, terms and a written competition policy are in place, and none would discuss rates-on-line or prices.

07Rules

How the community works.

  • Moderation follows published rules, applied the same way to everyone.
  • Personal data is used to run the community and is not shared for marketing.
  • Taking part gives no authority, appointment or influence over findings.
  • Conflicts of interest are declared before work begins.
08Key terms

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
Community of practiceA group of people who share a concern or a craft and learn to do it better by interacting regularly; the term comes from Lave and Wenger's work on situated learning.
Conflict of interestA situation in which financial, professional or personal interests could compromise, or appear to compromise, judgement in research or review.
Personal dataAny information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person, directly or indirectly, such as a name, an identification number, location data or an online identifier, as the EU General Data Protection Regulation defines it.
Catastrophe modelSoftware that combines hazard, exposure and vulnerability modules to simulate many possible events and estimate the distribution of insured loss.

Bring your expertise to this field.

The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.
