Specialist network Industry platforms
STEM + finance

Every sector of finance, read through the methods it depends on.

The Global Risks Alliance (GRA) runs a specialist community for each part of the financial system. Each platform joins a sector, such as insurance, banking or sovereign capital, with the science, technology, engineering and mathematics it relies on, so every claim traces to a method, a data source and its limits. Twenty-one platforms, each at its own address.

01STEM + finance

A platform is a sector plus the methods it relies on.

Banking Nexus is credit modelling, network contagion, scenario mathematics and machine-learning model risk, applied to banks, by people who can examine one another’s work. Four families of method run through every GRA platform.

Actuarial and quantitative methods

Probability, actuarial mathematics and extreme value theory for the rare, severe losses that drive insurance and capital. The question is the shape of the tail, not the average year.

Network contagion

Network science applied to exposures between institutions, markets and providers: how a loss in one node travels through credit lines, funding, payments and shared dependencies.

Scenario mathematics

Scenario design and stress testing that combine physical, operational and economic shocks, compare outcomes across plausible futures and say what was not tested.

Model risk

Validation, uncertainty quantification and human oversight for the statistical and machine-learning models that institutions increasingly rely on, and that many rely on at once.

Each method has one canonical description in the STEM Commons hosted by GCRI; a platform shows how that method is used in its own sector.

Four groups across the financial system.

Pick a group to see its platforms, the thesis each pursues and the methods it is built on. Every platform here is established at its own address.

03How a platform works

Every platform follows the same path.

Learn one platform and you can read them all. Content, community and methods differ; the route from a question to a published, corrected answer does not.

  1. 01

    Field and methods

What the sector is, why its risks matter, and the STEM foundation it applies.

  2. 02

    Research

An agenda, methods and sources, each with uncertainty and limits.

  3. 03

    Community

Working groups and learning, once open, under the safeguards of a written competition policy.

  4. 04

    Test and publish

Selected work tested in the annual Universe programme and published through Reports with its corrections.

  5. 05

    Trust

The publisher, the boundary and the route to challenge anything the platform says.

04Counterparts

The same field, studied, governed and financed.

The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI), Lead Institution of the Nexus Consortium, asks what we know and how to test it. The Global Risks Forum (GRF) asks who decides and how institutions cooperate. GRA asks what the evidence means for a financial decision. Each keeps its own voice; they link rather than copy.

06Specialist platforms

Eleven more sector platforms, each at its own address.

Stability, catastrophe, disaster risk finance, climate and nature, market infrastructure, cyber, model risk, financial crime, sovereign debt, private credit and the actuarial core. Each page sets out scope and first methods; activities are published as each opens. The boundary already applies: a platform publishes evidence and never advises, solicits or transacts.

07Questions

Questions about GRA’s industry platforms.

What is a GRA industry platform?
A specialist community for one part of the financial system, built on named scientific and quantitative methods. It publishes research with its methods and limits, is designed to convene professionals under a written competition policy that counsel reviews before membership opens, and links to the matching science at GCRI and governance at GRF.
Do platforms offer financial products or deal flow?
No. Platforms publish evidence and convene professionals. They do not list projects for investment, recommend or solicit investors, match capital, broker cover, give investment advice, rate or approve anything, or carry out transactions of any kind.
How do I contribute to a platform?
Contributions run through GRA membership pathways and working groups, which open once their terms are adopted. Until then, register your interest at the membership application form, naming the platform and your area of expertise.
What does STEM + finance mean in practice?
It means each platform states the methods it relies on, such as actuarial mathematics, network contagion or scenario design, and every claim can be traced to a method, a data source and its limits. Methods are shared across platforms, so a catastrophe modeller and a flood scientist meet through the same method.

Bring your expertise to a sector platform.

Tell GRA which platform interests you and what you can contribute. The acknowledgement gives a reference and names the next step. An enquiry is not an application and creates no membership.
