The Global Risks Alliance (GRA)
Private credit portfolios concentrate in certain sectors, sponsors and borrower types, such as software, healthcare services and business services owned by private equity. Concentration can amplify losses if a sector or sponsor model comes under pressure. This page sets out how concentration builds, how it is measured, and who decides.

Private credit concentration is the clustering of private loans in certain sectors, sponsors, managers and shared deals, which exposes portfolios to common shocks. It is measured from fund disclosures and deal data. Investment committees, institutional investors, regulators and lender groups hold the decisions.
Where a portfolio's assets sit, and how much of its value is most exposed. Hypothetical assets, not an assessment.
Sector and borrower common exposures. The dossier below sets out how the risk develops, what is measured, where the data come from, how it is modelled and who decides.
Lenders favour sectors with recurring revenue and high margins. If a sector's business model is disrupted, many loans weaken together.
A few large sponsors account for much deal flow. Their strategies and health affect many borrowers and lenders at once.
A small number of large managers hold a growing share of assets, concentrating origination, valuation and workout decisions.
Large loans are shared among several funds. Distress at one borrower affects multiple lenders and their investors.
Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Herfindahl index | A measure of concentration calculated as the sum of squared shares, here of exposure by sector. |
| Club deal | A loan shared among a small group of lenders rather than syndicated widely. |
| Intercreditor agreement | An agreement setting the rights and priorities of different lenders to the same borrower. |
Each indicator carries its unit, its cadence, the kind of source behind it and the evidence label a value would carry. No values are shown: a programme supplies them under its own authority.
| Indicator | Unit | Cadence | Source type | Label |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sector share of portfolio | percent by sector | quarterly | Fund and BDC disclosures | DECLARED |
| Top borrower exposures | percent of portfolio | quarterly | Fund disclosures | DECLARED |
| Sponsor concentration | share of deals by largest sponsors | annual | Deal databases | REPORTED |
| Manager market share | share of assets by largest managers | annual | Industry data | REPORTED |
| Loans held by several funds | share of loans | per study | BDC filing analysis | ESTIMATED |
| Herfindahl index of sector exposure | dimensionless | quarterly | Calculated from disclosures | ESTIMATED |
The topic as a computational graph: named sources feed the methods, an evidence review gates the outputs, and the decisions stay with the authorities that hold them.
Fig. 02Nodes carry their type, two metric rows and a state; connectors show what feeds what; dashed frames name the owners; the timeline is the cadence. Design of the pipeline, not a record of a run.

Private Credit prepares evidence. The decisions below are taken by the authorities named, under their own rules, and never by the platform.

How portfolios are distributed across industries such as software, health care and business services.
How much lending depends on a limited number of private equity owners.
How often the same companies borrow from multiple private lenders.
Sector, technology, policy, physical climate and supply-chain shocks.
Private credit has favoured sectors with recurring revenues and asset-light business models, such as software and services. These may be resilient in some downturns and vulnerable to others, such as technological disruption or regulatory change.
Sponsor concentration means that the strategies and fortunes of a limited number of private equity firms affect many loans. Sponsor behaviour in distress, whether they support companies or walk away, is a key uncertainty.
Club deals and unitranche structures may concentrate exposures among fewer lenders per borrower, while the same borrowers may appear across many funds of the same manager.
Common shocks, such as a rise in interest rates, a recession or disruption from artificial intelligence, could affect many borrowers simultaneously, raising default correlation.
Physical and transition climate risks are relevant for borrowers in exposed sectors and locations, though asset-light portfolios may appear less exposed than they are through supply chains.
| Method or data | What it shows | Its limit |
|---|---|---|
| Portfolio composition data | Sector and sponsor exposure | Aggregated and lagged |
| Overlap analysis | Shared borrowers across lenders | Requires confidential data |
| Sector scenario analysis | Effects of industry shocks | Assumption-dependent |
| Default correlation studies | Clustering of defaults | Short history at current scale |
