01In brief

The short answer.

Taking part in Reinsurance and Catastrophe is open to reinsurance analysts, catastrophe modellers and actuaries and to institutions and national programmes working on insurance and catastrophe. Experts contribute knowledge, review or data; institutions follow the GRA participation routes; countries go through the Consortium Secretariat. An enquiry receives a reference and creates no membership, role or influence over findings.

From enquiry to contribution.

Membership and research participation: a working group from charter to sunsetA charter sets the question and the code of conduct; members join with declared interests; a workplan produces deliverables that are reviewed and credited; the group reports and sunsets or renews. Design of the process, not a record of a run.

03Geography

Hazards and exposure in the Gulf of Mexico coast.

For membership and research participation, in GRA's spatial-finance reading, the map opens on population density and night lights with built-up and settlement extent from NASA GIBS, framed on the Gulf of Mexico coast; every other NASA layer, live feed and forecast waits in the layer list.

The interactive map needs JavaScript; the layer list and sources are below.

05Contributions

How catastrophe modellers and others could contribute to Reinsurance and Catastrophe.

Participation in Reinsurance and Catastrophe confers no authority, endorsement or access to any transaction.

  • Open-model work for Reinsurance and Catastrophe, under its data and competition rules.
  • Post-event loss analysis for Reinsurance and Catastrophe, under its data and competition rules.
  • Review for Reinsurance and Catastrophe, under its data and competition rules.

Contributions to Reinsurance and Catastrophe are reviewed before use and credited; Reinsurance and Catastrophe never accepts contract terms.

06What it means

Participation and its limits.

  • An enquiry receives a reference; it does not create membership, a role or an assignment.
  • Taking part gives no authority, appointment or influence over findings.
  • Conflicts of interest are declared before work begins.

The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.

07Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
Declaration of interestsA written statement in which an expert or participant discloses financial, professional and personal interests that could constitute a real, potential or apparent conflict of interest, so that others can judge and manage it; WHO uses this procedure for its experts.
Service level R0The current service level of Nexus pages: information and enquiries only. An enquiry receives a reference and a named next step; it creates no membership, contract, assignment or commitment.
Community of practiceA group of people who share a concern or a craft and learn to do it better by interacting regularly; the term comes from Lave and Wenger's work on situated learning.
