Financial discipline overview

Banking risk management is the discipline of measuring, limiting and governing the risks banks take in lending, funding, trading and operating. It combines credit analysis, treasury and liquidity management, market risk, operational resilience, model risk and governance, under prudential regulation. On Banking Nexus, The Global Risks Alliance (GRA) treats the discipline as shared industry research: how risks reach banks, how banks transmit them onward and what the profession needs to understand them. It is research, not execution.

01In brief

The short answer.

The Banking Nexus sector overview covers banking risk, resilience, credit, liquidity, operational dependencies and emerging technologies. It sets out who is in scope, from bank risk professionals and credit officers, how risk reaches the sector and how it travels onward, analysed with stress testing, operational resilience, and credit and liquidity frameworks. GRA builds shared industry understanding and does not advise, rate or assess individual firms.

04The discipline

Five families of bank risk.

RiskWhat it concernsCore tools
CreditBorrowers and counterparties failing to payCredit assessment, limits, provisioning, collateral
Liquidity and fundingMeeting outflows when funding withdrawsCash-flow projections, liquid buffers, contingency funding plans
Market and interest rateLosses from price and rate movementsSensitivity analysis, hedging, limits
OperationalFailures of people, processes, systems and third partiesResilience mapping, controls, incident management
Model and governanceFlawed models, weak oversight, poor cultureValidation, board oversight, internal audit

These categories overlap. Severe events usually combine several, which is why Banking Nexus studies their interaction.

05Basel structure

Three pillars, and where climate enters each.

PillarContentClimate entry point
Pillar 1Minimum capital for credit, market and operational riskIndirect, through risk weights and collateral valuation
Pillar 2Supervisory review and the bank's own capital assessmentBCBS 2022 principles; ICAAP scenario analysis
Pillar 3Market discipline through disclosureVoluntary BCBS climate framework of June 2025, where adopted
06Why it matters

Bank failures are public events.

Because banks fund the economy and run payments, their distress affects people far beyond shareholders. History shows that banking crises tend to produce deep and long-lasting recessions, falls in lending and large fiscal costs. Prudential regulation, deposit protection and resolution regimes exist because of these spillovers.

The risks banks face are changing. Physical climate hazards, nature loss, cyber threats, concentration in technology providers, faster digital deposit flows and the use of AI in credit decisions all alter how and how quickly losses can arise.

07Research, not execution

What the platform does with the discipline.

Shared questions

Precompetitive research

Methods and evidence every bank needs and none can build alone.

Aggregated data

No firm identifiable

Evidence is aggregated so that no bank, borrower or customer can be identified.

GRA

Shared evidence only

GRA publishes aggregated, precompetitive research. It assesses no bank and advises no one.

12Questions

Questions and answers.

Does Banking Nexus give risk-management advice?
No. GRA is a nonprofit business league for the financial services industry. It does not lend, underwrite, rate, invest, advise on or arrange transactions, introduce counterparties or take transaction-based pay, and readiness work is not approval.
Is the platform only for large banks?
No. Smaller and regional banks often face concentrated exposures and depend on shared providers, which makes shared research especially relevant to them.
How does this relate to prudential regulation?
Banking Nexus studies risks within the framework regulators set. It does not interpret regulation for any firm or lobby on individual rules.
