Asia and the Pacific region

The Asia and the Pacific programme spans dense manufacturing and logistics networks, large monsoon and glacier-fed basins, and Pacific island states facing compound climate and connectivity risk. Work is organised by subregion so that national programmes can compare dependencies without merging their data or authority. The Global Risks Alliance (GRA) offers the financial perspective: catastrophe and protection-gap questions, supply-chain concentration in electronics and critical inputs, and compute concentration in financial infrastructure. The programme is forming. See Regional programmes.

01In brief

The short answer.

The Asia and the Pacific region, seen from GRA, is the Nexus Consortiums region of manufacturing and logistics networks, monsoon and glacier-fed basins and Pacific island states facing compound climate and connectivity risk. GRA offers the financial perspective, including catastrophe and protection-gap questions; the region is forming.

02Spatial finance

A parametric trigger, read on the map.

How a storm crossing a trigger zone would set a payment. Real geography; synthetic storm and design terms.

A tropical cyclone passing Jamaica, read against two ways of triggering a payment.Synthetic storm and design terms, not a policy or a price.
03Coverage and state

What exists in this region today.

Element Current state
Programme state Forming
Regional host None on record; the region is in formation
Named programme The East Asia Nexus Consortium programme sits within this region. Its public programme page is published by GRA; formation records and participating structures are confirmed by the Secretariat before they are listed
Planned hubs India, Singapore, Japan: planned coordination roles, not offices
Regional desk asiapacific@therisk.global, a desk of the Consortium Secretariat
GRA service level R0: information and enquiries

Countries in the region are research coverage. A country or hub named on this page is not a GRA office, member or partner, and a planned hub is not an operating site.

04Risk-finance architecture

Instruments already on the public record.

Instrument or body What it does in the region
Pacific Catastrophe Risk Insurance Company (PCRIC) Parametric cyclone and earthquake cover for Pacific island governments
Southeast Asia Disaster Risk Insurance Facility (SEADRIF) Regional risk pool and flood cover for participating ASEAN members
World Bank catastrophe bonds Issued for several countries in the region with parametric earthquake and cyclone triggers
Supervisory climate guidance Climate risk management guidance from several regional central banks and insurance supervisors
05Spatial reading

How GRA reads the region's exposure.

Monsoon flood, tropical cyclone and earthquake drive the region's catastrophe exposure, often in dense manufacturing and logistics hubs that matter to global supply chains. GRA reads storm tracks from IBTrACS and flood layers against industrial zones and ports, so a single event can be traced from insured property to trade finance. Coastal evidence comes from GCRI island resilience.

06Shared systems

Cross-border systems, read for their financial meaning.

Shared system Research question Financial reading
Glacier-fed and monsoon basins How will changes in snowmelt, monsoon timing and groundwater use alter water, power and food security across the Indus, Ganges-Brahmaputra and Mekong systems? Agricultural and hydropower credit; fiscal exposure to flood and drought
Semiconductor and electronics networks Which fabrication, materials and logistics nodes are single points of failure for regional and global production? Correlated earnings shocks across holdings; trade-credit exposure
Maritime chokepoints and ports How would disruption at a strait or hub port propagate through energy imports, food and manufacturing? Marine and cargo insurance; working-capital stress
Typhoon, cyclone and seismic hazards Where do compound hazards meet dense exposure and limited restoration capacity? Catastrophe claims and reinsurance dependency; protection gaps
Island connectivity How many Pacific states depend on a single subsea cable or satellite path, and what continuity is realistic? Payment and public-service continuity in small states

The research questions come from the regional programme registry and are examined with evidence from The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI). GRA's contribution is the third column.

07Financial questions

What the region's financial centres are designed to examine.

  • Catastrophe and protection-gap questions for typhoon, flood and earthquake exposure.
  • Supply-chain concentration in electronics and critical inputs.
  • Technology and compute concentration in regional financial infrastructure.
  • Readiness work on these questions follows the translation method; none is a finding until evidence is assembled and reviewed.
08Planned hubs

Coordination roles and their programme focus.

  1. 01

    India

Monsoon and heat, river systems, food, health, digital infrastructure, grids and Indian Ocean connections.

  2. 02

    Singapore

Import dependencies, ports, urban continuity, digital systems and finance.

  3. 03

    Japan

Seismic and tsunami resilience, manufacturing, robotics, ageing, energy and supply chains.

Hub focus is taken from the consortium geography. Regional dialogue is convened by The Global Risks Forum (GRF); see GRF Asia and the Pacific region. Shared-system evidence is on GCRI Asia and the Pacific region. Other regions: Middle East and North Africa and North America.

09Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

Term Definition
Catastrophe bond A security whose principal is reduced if a defined catastrophe triggers a payout to the sponsor.
Small island developing states A UN-recognised group of island countries sharing social, economic and environmental vulnerabilities.
Supply chain The network of organizations, activities and flows that turns inputs into products and delivers them to users.

11Questions

Questions and answers.

Does GRA have an office in Asia and the Pacific?
No. GRA has no regional offices. The hubs listed are planned coordination roles in the consortium geography, and none is an operating site until its host decision is on record.
Are the financial questions findings?
No. They are the questions the regional programme is designed to examine. Findings appear only after evidence is assembled, labelled and reviewed.
Who do I contact about this region?
Regional programme enquiries go to the Consortium Secretariat's regional desk at asiapacific@therisk.global, or to contact@therisk.global. Finance-readiness questions can go to readiness@globalriskalliance.com. The acknowledgement gives a reference and names the next step.
What is the East Asia Nexus Consortium?
A named programme within this region, in formation. Its participating structures are listed only once the Secretariat confirms their formation records.
