Technology and operational risk

Financial services now run on digital infrastructure: payment rails, cloud platforms, data providers and models. This group of The Global Risks Alliance (GRA) sector platforms covers technology and operational risk through two established communities, Fintech Nexus and Financial Regulation Nexus, and several proposed communities for payments, cyber resilience, model risk and financial crime. The platforms publish evidence for institutions and supervisors to use as they see fit. They never endorse a vendor, advocate for a member or operate any service. This page is part of the specialist financial network.

01In brief

The short answer.

The technology and operational risk group of GRA sector platforms covers the digital infrastructure financial services run on through two established communities, Fintech Nexus and Financial Regulation Nexus, and proposed communities for payments, cyber resilience, model risk and financial crime. They publish evidence and never test, rank or endorse products.

02Spatial finance

Settlement dependencies, and what fails with a node.

How a failure at one financial centre can spread through settlement links. Design links, not real dependencies.

03Established platforms

Two communities, each at its own address.

Fintech

Fintech Nexus

Payments, digital identity, distributed ledgers and AI in financial services, examined for both capability and new concentrations of risk. Visit Fintech Nexus.

Regulation

Financial Regulation Nexus

The evidence regulators and supervisors may draw on for systemic risk, disclosure and conduct, offered as research and never as advocacy for any member. Visit Financial Regulation Nexus.

04Supervisory frame

Technology risk now has its own rulebooks.

05Spatial view

Digital infrastructure has a physical footprint.

Cloud regions, data centres, cable landing stations and payment processing sites are located assets exposed to heat, flood and power failure. GRA's operational work maps them as the nodes behind important business services. Work continues at Payments and Market Infrastructure and Financial Cyber Resilience.

07Shared questions

What operational risk looks like now.

  • Concentration on a small number of cloud, data and model providers used by many institutions
  • Failures that propagate instantly across real-time payment and settlement systems
  • Models whose errors are common to every institution that uses them
  • Fraud and cyber attacks that exploit the joins between institutions
  • Recovery objectives that assume other providers will still be running

Related channels are described on cyber and operational, AI and model risk and payments and market infrastructure.

08Boundaries

Research, never vendor assessment or advocacy.

These platforms do not test, rank or endorse technology products, run any payment or market service, or lobby for any member's position. Evidence offered to supervisors is research they may choose to use; GRA seeks no privileged access to any authority. Forward-looking work appears under financial technology and transformation. The technology science of The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI) is described in its technology pages, including payment and financial market technology.

11Questions

Questions and answers.

Does Financial Regulation Nexus lobby regulators?
No. It publishes research that regulators and supervisors may draw on. It does not advocate for any member's interest and offers no privileged access.
Can a technology firm take part?
Fintech and market-infrastructure firms are among the institutions membership is designed for, once terms are adopted. Participation never implies GRA endorsement of a product.
Are the proposed communities active?
No. They are in development and not open for participation. Their pages describe intended scope and status.
How do I report a security issue with this site?
Write to security@globalriskalliance.com, without sending exploit details or personal data in a first message.
