Financial discipline overview

Private credit is lending originated and held by nonbank lenders, mainly closed-end and semi-liquid funds, business development companies, insurers and specialist lenders, outside public bond and syndicated loan markets. Its risk discipline combines credit analysis, structuring, valuation, liquidity management and portfolio construction. On Private Credit, The Global Risks Alliance (GRA) studies the discipline as shared industry research: how the market is built, where risk sits and how it could transmit. It is research, not execution.

01In brief

The short answer.

The Private Credit sector overview covers nonbank and privately originated credit, liquidity, leverage and corporate exposure. It sets out who is in scope, from private-credit professionals and banking analysts, how risk reaches the sector and how it travels onward, analysed with private lending exposure, valuation risk and borrower stress. GRA builds shared industry understanding and does not advise, rate or assess individual firms.

05Sector map

The parts of the system Private Credit examines.

Private Credit frames are set by European Union, FSB and IOSCO.

PartChannel Private Credit studies
FundsOriginate and hold loans
BanksProvide subscription, NAV and back leverage
Insurers and pensionsInvest directly and through affiliates
Retail vehiclesOffer periodic redemption

Shocks travel between these parts, and Private Credit studies the links: Where does private credit meet regulated balance sheets, and what happens when it is stressed? The evidence base is public filings, supervisory surveys and statistics on fund leverage.

06Why it matters

A larger role in corporate finance.

Private credit has grown as banks retrenched from some types of corporate lending and as long-term investors sought yield and diversification. For many mid-sized companies it is now a primary source of debt finance, so its behaviour in a downturn affects investment and employment.

Its risks differ from bank lending in how they are funded, valued and disclosed. Closed-end funds do not face deposit runs, but semi-liquid vehicles, fund-level leverage and valuation lags introduce their own vulnerabilities. Limited public data makes it harder for the industry and for researchers to see aggregate exposures.

12Questions

Questions and answers.

Does GRA rate private loans or funds?
No. GRA is a nonprofit business league for the financial services industry. It does not lend, underwrite, rate, invest, advise on or arrange transactions, introduce counterparties or take transaction-based pay, and readiness work is not approval.
Is private credit the same as private equity?
No. Private equity owns companies; private credit lends to them. The two are often linked because many private credit borrowers are owned by private equity sponsors.
Why is data limited?
Because loans are privately negotiated and not traded, and disclosure requirements are lighter than in public markets.
