ObservatoryEarth observation

The GRA Observatory.

Recent earthquakes and natural events from open feeds, and the layers of open data that describe the ground under them. Each value carries its measure, date, source and how it was produced.

The Global Risks Alliance (GRA) works on making interconnected physical and operational risk legible to finance. The Observatory shows open Earth observation as a starting point for that conversation: where events happen, and the layers that describe exposure, each labelled as observed, reported, modelled or estimated.

01Read this first

A committed snapshot, not a warning service.

Everything on this page is a copy of open feeds and datasets taken when the site was last built, with its date shown beside it. Nothing here updates by itself, and nothing here is an alert.

For warnings and instructions, follow your national meteorological, hydrological and civil-protection authorities. An event that is not on this page may still be happening.

Use it as a first look at the open data behind physical-risk screening. It is not a risk rating and not a basis for a financial decision on its own.

02Recent events

Earthquakes and natural events, as of the snapshot.

Earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 and above from the U.S. Geological Survey, and wildfires, storms, sea and lake ice and other natural events relayed by NASA’s Earth Observatory Natural Event Tracker (EONET).

What the labels mean

  • Snapshot: copied from the feed on the date shown, not live.
  • Verified: reviewed by USGS. To verify: an automatic USGS solution that may be revised.
  • Secondary: relayed by NASA EONET from another agency; each event keeps its original source.
  • Some agency feeds are not shown yet while their licence terms are reviewed.

03The layer stack

Eleven layers that describe the same ground.

Land, residents, water stress, agricultural water risk, generating capacity, heat exposure, relief, elevation, land cover, night lights and the satellite view, on one map. Each keeps its own measure, unit, date and source; none is added to another.

Observed, reported, modelled, estimated

  • Observed: measured by an instrument, such as a satellite.
  • Reported: stated by the operator, such as a power plant’s capacity.
  • Modelled: computed by a published model, such as water stress.
  • Estimated: derived with stated assumptions, such as residents per cell, a lower bound.
  • Heat exposure is ground skin temperature, not air temperature and not a heat warning.
